What is SoTL?
In essence, SoTL transforms the classroom into a site for research, where faculty members can rigorously examine their teaching methods and contribute to a broader understanding of how to effectively educate students. SoTL is a field in higher education focused on the systematic inquiry into teaching practices and their impact on student learning. SoTL involves faculty members using research methods to investigate their own teaching, assess its effectiveness, and share their findings to improve the overall quality of teaching and learning.
  • Systematic Inquiry: SoTL is not just about teaching well, but about systematically studying teaching practices. This involves identifying a problem or question related to teaching and learning, designing a study, collecting data, analyzing the results, and sharing the findings.
  • Focus on Student Learning: The core of SoTL is understanding how students learn and how teaching practices can be improved to enhance that learning
  • Disciplinary Focus: SoTL can be applied within any academic discipline, with faculty members using their disciplinary expertise to investigate teaching and learning within their field.
  • Public Sharing of Findings: A key aspect of SoTL is making the results of the inquiry public, often through publications, presentations, or other forms of scholarly communication.
  • Improving Teaching and Learning: The ultimate goal of SoTL is to improve teaching practices and student learning outcomes.

General Policies and Best Practices in Pursuing SoTL-Based Publications
Key policies and best practices include:
  • Identify Scholarly Publications: Identifying scholarly publications is crucial for academic and research work because they offer credible, reliable, and authoritative information compared to other sources. Scholarly publications, , undergo rigorous evaluation by experts, ensuring a high standard of quality and accuracy in the research presented. This process enhances the credibility of the information and supports the advancement of knowledge within specific fields.
  • Understand IRB requirements: Even though SoTL focuses on teaching and learning, projects involving students as participants often require IRB review or exemption.
  • Know journal guidelines: Each journal has specific expectations for SoTL manuscripts, including structure, ethics statements, and evidence-based practice.
  • Follow ethical teaching research principles: Protect student confidentiality and ensure participation does not impact grades or standing.
  • Collaborate: Partner with teaching and learning centers, instructional designers, and librarians to strengthen methodological rigor.
  • Document systematically: Keep detailed records of project design, interventions, and assessment outcomes to streamline publication preparation.
Common Pitfalls During Manuscript Preparation
Frequent pitfalls include:
  • Weak or vague research questions: Ensure the manuscript clearly defines what was studied and why it matters.
  • Insufficient literature review: Failing to connect the project to existing scholarship weakens publication value.
  • Methodological misalignment: The study design, assessment tools, and analysis should directly address the research question.
  • Poor writing clarity or structure: SoTL manuscripts should follow standard empirical research structures with clear headings and flow.
  • Ignoring journal scope or guidelines: Submitting to journals without tailoring formatting and focus to their readership increases rejection risk.
