Creating Persistent/Durable Links to Library Resources
What Are Persistent Links?
Persistent links are the easiest way to link to library resources in Canvas, course syllabi, reading lists, websites, and email. A persistent link (also called a permalink, permanent link, stable link, static link, or durable link) is a URL or web address that will consistently point to a specific library resource, such as an electronic book, article or database.

Unfortunately, simply copying and pasting the URL from the browser address bar will sometimes not work. Some of the hyperlinks to resources include a session ID that expires after a short time.

To get around this problem, many of the databases have ways to create a persistent link that students will be able to use as long as they are connected via OpenAthens or are on a Mercer campus network. OpenAthens is a service the library uses to connect Mercer students, faculty and staff to subscription resources when they are off-campus. You can create persistent links to books, databases, articles, and in some cases book chapters. The exact method varies from database to database (see below). If you wish to link to a database not covered here, or have questions or problems, contact Carolyn Klatt klatt_ca@mercer.edu
Creating a Persistent Link to a Resource in the Library Catalog
You can link to entries in the catalog. If the resource is online, the entry will have a link/s to the full text for that resource. The advantage to this method is that if the publisher should alter the url to the resource, those changes will be reflected in the link/s to full text. The disadvantage is that it involves an extra step for the student and, if the publisher allows linking to a book chapter, you cannot link directly to a book chapter via this method.
  1. After searching the catalog, click on a book or article title that you want.
  2. Next you will be presented with the item's record view, which has more information about the item and tools for citation, exporting, and creating permanent links.
  3. If you want to link to a resource in your instruction materials, just click on PERMALINK and copy it. That link can be used anywhere.

Creating Persistent Links for Off-Campus Access
Why Do I Need to Log In to Access the Library's Resources Off-Campus?

Due to license agreements, the Library's electronic resources are only available off-campus to current students, faculty, and staff. The Library uses a proxy server (OpenAthens) to identify authorized off-campus users.

How Does Off-Campus Access Work?
  1. When you click an electronic resource on the library's website, library's catalog, or Canvas from off-campus, the proxy will take you to a login page. (If you're on-campus, you may not be asked to log in.)
  2. Enter your Mercer username and password. (The same one you use to access your email}.
Creating Links for Off-Campus Access

There are two ways to create persistent links (aka "Athenize") using OpenAthens for off-campus access. First you can use the OpenAthens link generator. This method is the most reliable way to create a link. The second option is to add the Mercer OpenAthens stem to a permalink for the resource.

OpenAthens Link Generator

To use the OpenAthens link Generator:
  1. Go to https://go.openathens.net/generate/mercer.edu/70933467
  2. Paste a permalink or stable URL for the resource you would like to link to in the box and press enter.
  3. Copy the generated Athenized URL.
  4. Use the copied URL to link to the source.

Mercer's OpenAthens Stem

In most cases, you can simply add Mercer's OpenAthens Stem in front of a permalink and it will work. To create a persistent link using the Mercer OpenAthens stem:
  1. Open Notepad or a text editor of your choice.
  2. Copy and paste the Mercer OpenAthens stem: https://go.openathens.net/redirector/mercer.edu?url=
  3. Locate and copy the permalink or stable URL for the resource you would like to share.
  4. Paste the copied link directly after the = sign at the end of the Mercer OpenAthens stem. There should be no spaces between the end of the Mercer OpenAthens stem and the permalink or stable URL of the resource you'd like to Athenize.
  5. A link to Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease will look like https://go.openathens.net/redirector/mercer.edu?url=https://www.clinicalkey.com/dura/browse/bookChapter/3-s2.0-C20160040871

To access eBooks at the chapter/section level, they will usually need to be "Athenized" via the OpenAthens Link Generator.
